HARD TO HURT
Senior Strong, Break Falling,
and Physical Resilience for All Ages
Course Description:
“Hard to Hurt: Senior Strong, Break Falling, and Physical Resilience for All Ages” explores a dynamic approach to rehabilitation and physical well-being; utilizing a “low tech, high concept” approach through kettlebell, sand, and strength training with principles of break falling and martial arts informed therapy for enhanced resilience across all ages.
This engaging course moves beyond traditional methods by emphasizing an integrated neurological philosophy as a foundation for functional whole-body movements and practical application for diverse populations, from seniors seeking strength to individuals aiming for improved physical robustness. Participants will actively learn and experiment with exercises and techniques designed to build strength, improve balance, enhance fall protection, and foster overall physical confidence. Through movement-based learning and real-world case discussions, clinicians will gain innovative tools to empower their clients towards greater independence and a more resilient body… and, mind!
This will be a highly physically active and demanding course. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing along with any hydration or nourishment supplies they might need.

Why Is This Course Important?
For Falls, Alone...
- High Prevalence: Falls in older adults (65+) are a major public health concern. Over 1 in 4 older adults report falling each year.
- Serious Injuries: Overall, about 1 out of 10 falls in older adults results in an injury serious enough to require medical treatment or restrict activity for at least one day, often leading to hospitalization.
- Increasing Death Rates: The age-adjusted fall death rate in the U.S. increased significantly from 55.3 per 100,000 older adults in 2012 to 78.0 per 100,000 in 2021, indicating a worsening trend in fatal falls.
Only 1 in 4 adults meet the bar
In 2005, 40% of adults met CDC physical activity guidelines.
Now in 2025, that number is often cited closer to only 1 in 4 adults consistently meeting the standard.
Adult obesity rates have move from 30% in 2005 to now nearly 45% with 9% “severely obese.”
Childhood obesity has risen dramatically from 17% in 2005 to over 20% by early 2020s.
Less than 25% Physically Qualify to Enlist in the Army
A 2020 Pentagon study revealed that 77% of young Americans aged 17 to 24 are ineligible for military service without a waiver.
🚫 Top Reasons for Disqualification
Overweight: 11%
Drug and alcohol abuse: 8%
Medical/physical health issues: 7%
Mental health conditions: 4%
- 44% of disqualified individuals were ineligible for multiple reasons.
More Hurt, More Often
- Injury rate among females increased 16% between 2011-2014
- Injury death rates from 2019–2021 increased by +25%
- 2005–2006: 25% of U.S. adults reported experiencing pain lasting a day or more in the past month (CDC).
- About 10% reported pain persisting for a year or more.
- 2018: Reports of pain in at least one site increased by 10% compared to 2002, representing an additional 10.5 million adults experiencing pain.
Less Able, Less Durable
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Recipients: Around 7.7% of individuals under 65 receiving SSI attributed their disability to musculoskeletal conditions (NCBI).
- Chronic Pain Prevalence: As of 2024, over 51.6 million U.S. adults live with chronic pain, with 17.1 million experiencing high-impact chronic pain that frequently limits life or work activities (U.S. Pain Foundation).
- Workforce Impact: Approximately 83% of individuals with high-impact chronic pain are unable to work, highlighting a significant increase in disability related to musculoskeletal conditions (U.S. Pain Foundation).
Contributing Factors
Rising Prevalence: Musculoskeletal conditions have become the leading cause of disability among adults, with 1 in 2 adults affected.
Healthcare Utilization: Musculoskeletal diseases account for more than 50% of disabling health conditions reported by adults, leading to increased healthcare visits and costs.
Economic Impact: In 2015, nearly 364 million workdays were lost due to musculoskeletal conditions, averaging 10 days per worker, more than any other major health condition.
Frequency of Impact: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders account for about 34% of all workdays lost due to occupational injuries or illnesses.
How Do WE Make A Difference?
Improve Our Fall Programs
All too often, clinical fall programs obsess over prevention. There might be a fall recovery drill tossed in, but most don’t dive into break falling technique, practice, mindset, and the actual skill of falling.
Sure, we remove risk factors — but, that’s like teaching someone how to drive without teaching them how to use the brakes.
Empower Patients Through Strength Training and Strength-Skill
Strength as both a skill and a lifelong biological asset is highly underutilized across all settings and specialities in healthcare — rehab therapy is no different.
Distinguish yourself as an expert in the field that can build patients up, from the geriatric home bound level to the pediatric developmental level through universal principles.
Develop Mental Toughness and Physical Resilience for All Populations
Enhance your practice with the latest evidence and a neurobiological look on an evidence based range of methods to develop true resilience — both mental and physical — for all ages, for all demographics, and for all sorts of human experiences.
Course Objectives:
- Explain the principles of physical resilience and their application across various age groups and clinical populations.
- Analyze the latest research on fall prevention and intervention strategies, including the biomechanics of break falling.
- Demonstrate foundational and intermediate kettlebell, sandbag, and bodyweight exercises with proper form and technique.
- Design safe and effective exercise programs for diverse patient populations, applying strength and conditioning principles.
- Integrate elements of break falling and martial arts-informed therapy into rehabilitation plans to enhance patient safety and functional outcomes.
- Evaluate patient competency in foundational movements and progress them appropriately through exercise progressions.
- Identify appropriate applications of “Hard to Hurt” principles in the treatment of common conditions, including geriatric care, orthopedic rehabilitation, and neurological rehabilitation.
- Develop and implement circuit training and group exercise programs incorporating “Hard to Hurt” principles.
