Surface Electromyography (EMG)

What is Surface EMG?

Surface EMG Biofeedback is a tool that measures muscle activity to help muscles work better and more efficiently. Small electrodes are used to measure the electrical signal (hertz) a muscle makes when it contracts as well as the overall activity of the muscle fibers. The voltage measured represents the amount of force a muscle (or group of muscles) is exerting in real-time.

Surface EMG can be used to teach the patient how to use a muscle as well as how to relax a muscle, using visual feedback. This helps to retrain the brain to correct movement patterns.
